Back in 2009, Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid of La Roux released their self-titled debut and along with it pop anthems like “Bulletproof,” “In For the Kill,” and “Quicksand.” Five years later, Jackson and her songwriting/production partner, Langmaid are no longer working together–though he still receives credit on six of the nine tracks off of this month’s Trouble In Paradise. Jackson describes the album’s theme as “the feeling of emptiness in a place where there was once joy.” Trouble In Paradise carries a much slower tempo than her debut self-titled work. At the same time, it’s a much warmer and sexier record, influenced by late ‘70s and early ‘80s sci-fi disco as well as dub and ragga. The bouncy pop song, “Kiss and Not Tell” slightly echoes the sound of 2009’s “Quicksand” and “Bulletproof.” Standout track “Tropical Chancer” is, as its name might imply, inspired by the island music of calypso and dancehall. While “Let Me Down Gently” is filled with dance floor rhythms and a steady electronic beat. Watch the music video for “Let Me Down Gently” on VEVO. La Roux kicks off her U.S./European tour on September 19! Check out a list of the dates here.
Heather Morris is currently, most well-known for her role as Brittany, a lesbian cheerleader or “cheerio”, on Fox’s hit television series, Glee. However, unbeknownst to many fans, Morris’ career did not start with the musical-comedy/drama. In 2006 Morris appeared on Season 2 of, So You Think You Can Dance, where she made it to “Vegas Week”. A year later, Morris received her big break as she was cast as one of Beyonce’s backup dancers on The Beyoncé Experience world tour. Later, she worked again with Beyonce on a mini “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It” promotional tour, and also danced backup for her and Tina Turner at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in 2008. Morris began to appear in small roles in films and television shows such as, Fired Up, Swingtown and Bedtime Stories.
In 2010, Morris made her appearance on the television series she is most associated with, Glee. She was recruited by Zach Woodlee, the choreographer for the Beyonce tour Morris was on, to teach the choreography for Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” dance to the Glee actors for a number in the show. During this time time, the show was looking for a third cheerleader, and Morris ended up landing the role of Brittany. The character was initially never written to be more than a background role, but the role grew as writers discovered Morris had a gift for delivering one-liners in a dim and sarcastic manner. The character became more prominent throughout the first season, moving from a moody cheerleader to the love interest of head Cheerio, Santana, making them the new favorite couple on the show. Along with Glee, Morris has appeared on film in ; Glee: 3D Concert Movie, Ice Age: Continental Drift, and Spring Breakers.
In September of 2013, the actress/singer/dancer became a mother to son Elijah with her long time boyfriend Taylor Hubbell. Due to her pregnancy, Morris decided to only guest star on Season 5 of the show, instead of being a regular, in order to spend more time with her new family. Morris is now apparently juggling motherhood along with work. Although not all the details have been released, Morris is working on a TV movie called, Romantically Speaking, where she plays character Ariel Cookson. It seems that Morris is only counting to make her mark in television and film. You Go Heather! Your fans will be cheering you on!
26 year-old Sevyn Streeter began her career as a member of the R&B-Pop group TG4. The group released the single “Virginity,” and not long afterwards the song hit number 88 on Bilboards Top 100. This was exciting for the group, but unfortunately they split immediately after the success of their single. Lucky for Sevyn Streeter, her talent was noticed and landed her a spot in yet another all-girl band called RichGirl. Much like the first group, this one dwindled just as quickly.
Sevyn Streeters strong point has always been writing music. As time passed, she felt as though writing was the best option for her… and it was. She wrote songs like “Yeah 3X,” for Chris Brown, and “Shower,” for Brandy. With over 10 successful singles written for famous artists, Sevyn Streeter landed recognition from Atlantic Records. The label immediately began working on singles for her to work on. Her first couple singles, “I like it” and “It won’t stop” hit iTunes and received attention all over the globe. With that, Sevyn Streeter released her EP debut album, “Call Me Crazy But..” In this album she collaborated with well-known artists like Diplo and Chris Brown.
With the platform that Sevyn Streeter now has, she is able to release a full-length album. Rumored to released sometime in 2014, the album will be titled “Fight For Me.” She mentions that this album is entirely inspired by her past relationship. She feels that personal experiences help artists feel a connection with songs and that is what this album entails entirely. Streeter says, “Music is emotional. Your job is to make people feel something. The best way to do that is to sing and speak from something they’ve personally been through. That’s where I write from.” Ultimately, this is what will draw people into her music. Allowing listeners to connect to the lyrics is what draws them in, much like the approach singer/songwriter, Taylor Swift, has taken.
Her work ethic, writing skills and soothing voice has brought her to where she is today. Sevyn Streeter is on her way to success and isn’t stoping any time soon!
Look out for Sevyn Streeter’s new album!
It has been roughly 3 years since he released his first album “+”. Now, a little older and wiser, Ed Sheeran released his second album, “X” (pronounced “multiply”), worldwide on June 23rd through Asylum Recordsand Atlantic Records. Since the album’s release, it has received positive reviews from fans, music critics, and other musicians in the industry. “X” has been an international success. In its first week, the album sold 182,000 copies, and has become the fastest-selling album of the year so far.
And it is not hard to see why listeners are drawn to the new album. The record is comprised of 12 songs (16 on the deluxe track), that more or less tells the story of the English singers emotional and personal journey over the last 3 years while completing the album. In a New York Times Article, Sheeran was quoted saying; “I did everything last year,” he said exhaustedly. “Everything. Everything wrong and everything right. It was a very important year.” His experiences have certainly aided in his success with this recent album. Along with the album, Sheeran also wrote “All of the Stars”, which was apart of soundtrack for the summer blockbuster, “The Fault in our Stars”. He also gained his first No.1 single in the UK with the album’s lead single, “Sing” produced by Pharrell Williams. Although Sheeran has begun to pair with other well-known music icons, he still has the acoustic, angelic sound that listeners fell in love with back in 2011. Except this time, Sheeran has something he lacked the first time around and is clearly after this time- a hit album!
London-based producer/DJ SBTRKT (pronounced ‘Subtract’) has released just one self-titled LP along with a slew of singles and EPs. In order to create a sense of anonymity, SBTRKT wears a tribal mask during performances–though his identity was revealed long ago. Aaron Jerome is the man behind the mask (literally). Speaking to his desire for anonymity, he says: “I’d rather not talk about myself as a person, and let the music speak for itself. The name SBTRKT is me taking myself away from that whole process.”
Most of the EPs and singles he’s released give off a cool club vibe. In each song, he mixes elements of dubstep, 2-step, house, soul, and techno into a bass-heavy blend of flowing melodies and intricate percussion. Jerome admits, “The stuff I make for clubs tends to be stuff you can mix in and mix out in a certain way, so it has to keep to a certain structure or BPM.” His LP has a much more coherent sound. It’s filled with experimental electronic soul and features a number of vocal collaborators. Jerome set out to make an individual SBTRKT sound on this album and he succeeded.
One of the major collaborators on this record is UK singer-songwriter/producer Sampha. He provides the vocal on six out of eleven songs on the album and has a warm, higher-ranged voice that seems built for R&B. In June of 2014, SBTRKT and Sampha released the single ‘Temporary View’. The song offers a lush blend of glitchy effects, snapping percussion, and thick textures. SBTRKT is presently touring globally. He’s also working on a new album.
The wait is finally over! The legendary British rock band, Pink Floyd, will be delivering a new album to long time fans in October 2014. The album “The Endless River”, will be the bands first record in the last 20 years.
Pink Floyd formed in 1965 and was comprised of members; Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and was later joined by David Gilmour. The band achieved international acclaim due to their progressive and psychedelic sound. They are now associated with being one of the most influential bands to change the history of commercial and popular music.
The upcoming album is mainly comprised of ambient and instrumental music based on the 1993-1994 ‘Division Bell’ recording sessions which feature, David Glimour, Nick Masonand Richard Wright. Even though the album is a blast from the past, vocalist, Durga MacBroom-Hudson, who has previously toured with the band, stated on her facebook page that it will consist of “all unreleased songs”. Pink Floyd has stated; “The album is produced by David Gilmour with Phil Manzanera, Youth and recording engineer Andy Jackson. Work is still in progress, but more details to come at the end of the summer.” There is no doubt that fans of the band will be anxiously awaiting any “more details” about the album as the summer progresses.
Thom Yorke began creating music and being inspired by artists at the youthful age of 10 years old. He knew his entire life that he wanted to work in the music industry, regardless of what else was presented to him along the way. Yorke attended an all-boys school where he met two young men that he added to his band because of their physical appearance. Little did he know the musical inclination the boys acquired. The following years promised to recruit two more members of the band. Low and behold, the 5 men’s collaborations unraveled into one of the most sensational bands known to man… even to this day! The world-renowned band we are speaking of is none other than the beloved group, Radiohead. The band’s five members include Thom Yorke (lead vocalist), Jonny Greenwood (keyboard), Ed O’Brian (guitarist), Colin Greenwood (bass guitar), and Philip Selway (drums).
The group began in 1991 with an EP album after signing off with the record label EPI. The people that signed them felt as though the bands talent deserved more of a memorable name than what they had at the time. The name of the band was given to them in 1991 as Radiohead. The next year they released another album, which ended up featuring the song “Creep.” Any Radiohead guru knows that Creep is one of their most famous and well-liked songs. With the popularity of such a new bands song, many people believed that the band would be a one hit wonder. But no worries — Radiohead put those non-believers in their place. The band began touring, doing interviews, landing covers of magazines, winning awards, and rallying up die-hard fans. They were here, and they were here to stay.
Honing in on the next, and best, few years of the bands career, they released about 4 more albums that shocked the world. Not only did they prove to vanish the one hit wonder rumors, but they also demonstrated the strength of the bands abilities. While the band was at their strong point they signed with Nigel Godrich who ended up being their full-time producer. Some said that the relationship Radiohead and Nigel had was similar to that of The Beatles and their producer. With that kind of comparison, the band was bound to do great things. And they did.
Radiohead released “5 Album Set,” in 2012 which was a blend of all of their most popular songs they had released over the years. That has been the last album we have seen from the band, but that doesn’t mean they’re done with each other. Radiohead appears at different venues and events to perform some of their hit singles.
Before releasing her debut album, Devotion in 2012, U.K. crooner Jessie Ware collaborated with SBTRKT on their song “Nervous” and dubstep producer Joker on “The Vision.” Her contributions on both of those tracks landed her a record deal with PMR Records. Jessie’s first LP was incredibly well received by critics. Spin gave it an 8/10, while Pitchfork gave it an 8.5/10 and dubbed it best new music. Devotion is an album of uncommon depth–a sophisticated, but stimulating hybrid of pop, soul, and adult contemporary. “Wildest Moments” is the catchiest, most mainstream sounding song on the album; however when it was released in June of 2012, it hardly caused a ripple, charting at 46.
It wasn’t until Katy Perry tweeted a video of the song playing in an episode of New Girl that “Wildest Moments” gained recognition. Jessie reckons the proudest moment of her career was hearing her song “Wildest Moments” in a montage of highlights from Andy Murray’s dramatic third-round victory at Wimbledon in 2012. Post album release, Jessie lent her vocals to Disclosure for their upbeat song “Confess To Me.” And she’s just released “Tough Love,” the first single off her forthcoming sophomore album, releasing sometime in 2014!
Clean Bandit is a British electronic band that came together in 2009. There are four official members of Clean Bandit and they are: Milan Neil Amin-Smith, Jack Patterson, Luke Patterson, and Grace Chatto. The quartette originated in the United Kingdom and their first single, “Mozart’s House”, reached UK’s top charts. The single also brought in two million views on YouTube! The band realized early in their career that they were capable of anything, so they broadened their dreams and underwent a vast change.
In 2014, Clean Bandit expanded their electronic vibe on over to the US. The first single they ever released in the US, quite recently, landed number one on top charts! Wow! The number one single is titled, “Rather Be”. The song features Jess Glynne and will be on Clean Bandit’s debut album New Eyes. This album will hit stores in the UK and US June 17th, 2014. The band that calls themselves Chromeo, consists of two brothers, Dave and Alain Macklovitch, aka “Dave 1 and P-Thugg“. They are essentially a born-again band. Chromeo has released their first album in 10 years called, “White Women”. The genre and energy of their music has transformed over the past decade. Sources say White Women has more of a disco-pop feel to it. Chromeo used to be more of an electronica-type band but time has shifted their interest.
White Women has several feel-good songs and it’s almost impossible not to tap your foot or bop your head to the beat of their sounds. While they have added a pop feel to their album, they didn’t fully let go of the electronica aspect. A couple songs on their album still include electronica, such as, “Come Alive”. It almost sounds like the genre of music one would hear while walking through stores like Abercrombie & Fitch or Hollister.
Chromeo is currently on tour and will be until October 12th. They are traveling all over the country to promote their new album. Catch Chromeo reclaim their fame in places like: New York, NY; Berlin, Germany; Barcelona, Spain; and even London, United Kingdom.
Amongst all of their accomplishments with music, Chromeo is also an icon in terms of mens fashion. The guys have a chill, Coachella-vibe to their style and have been an inspiration to the fashion world! Catch Dave 1 in GQ’s article “10 Essentials” discussing how to dress like a rebel!
